HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. Come August 28, the banks of the Krishna in Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Nalgonda, Guntur and Krishna districts in the State will be teeming with lakhs of devotees with the start of the 12-day Krishna Pushkarams. The Pushkarams commence at 2.04 pm on August 28 when the planet Brihaspati (Jupiter) enters Kanya rasi (Virgo), which rules the Krishna. Originating as a fountain from the mouth of a cow in an ancient temple of Lord Siva near Mahabaleshwar, the river traverses for 720 km in Maharashtra and Karnataka before entering Andhra Pradesh near Alampur. The Bhima, Tungabhadra, Dindi, Musi, Paleru and Munneru are the main tributaries. Krishna is the second largest river in Andhra Pradesh, having a length of 1,357 km.
Huge scale
The State Government has made elaborate arrangements for the convenience of the pilgrims attending the Pushkarams and programmed to spend Rs.210 crores. It is estimated that three crore people will attend the Pushkarams with nearly half of them congregating at Vijayawada. In all, 191 bathing ghats were constructed --100 (Krishna), 47 (Guntur), 8 (Kurnool), 19 (Nalgonda) and Mahabubnagar (17). A total of 261 works covering 128 towns and villages in the five districts were taken up, including beautification of Vijayawada, Amaravathi, Jurala, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams. The works include 11 roads and flood banks, 27 relating to beautification, electrification and safety measures. About 202 temples along the Krishna's banks have been taken up for renovation. The important temples which the pilgrims are expected to visit during the Pushkarams are Sangameswaram , Kanakadurga, Venugopalaswamy (35 km from Nagayalanka), Yoganandalakshminarasimha Swamy (15 km from Jaggaiahpet), Sri Amareswara Swamy (Amaravati, 13 km from Guntur), Mallikarjuna Swamy (Srisaialam), Sri Prasanna Anjaneya Swamy (Beechpally, 25 km from Kurnool), Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy (Mangalagiri) Jogulamba (Alampur, 22 km from Kurnool) and Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy (Nattapalli).
