HYDERABAD, AUG. 17. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today demanded that the Government release immediately 20 tmcft of water from Nagarjunasagar to save the kharif crop in the Krishna delta and warned of "severe consequences" if it failed to come to the rescue of farmers. Addressing a press conference here, the TDP leaders -- Y. Venkata Rao, D. Narender, MLA, and G. Uma, former MLA, -- accused the Government of discriminating against farmers of the delta region even while releasing water for the KC Canal from the Srisailam reservoir. Water for other regions should be made available after providing it to the Krishna delta as per the riparian rights, they contended. They criticised the recent statement of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, that an all-party meeting would be convened to discuss the release of water to the Krishna delta. At a separate press conference, the former Ministers -- T. Nageswara Rao and T. Seetharam -- lashed out at the Government for allegedly not following a transparent process in finalising pre-qualified bids for 26 irrigation projects.
