Rival groups clash, port tense

Kakinada: The situation in the port area turned tense on Tuesday afternoon following clash by rival groups of workers over sharing of work. At least two workers sustained bleeding head injuries. The police intervened and dispersed the warring groups. Three workers from HMS union have been taken into custody. The Superintendent of Police, V. Naveen Chand, said the situation was under control and police picket had been posted to avert further trouble.

5 pilgrims killed in road mishap

CUDDAPAH: Five persons were killed on the spot and three others sustained severe injuries when a jeep in which they were travelling rammed into a stationary lorry whose rear tyres got punctured, near Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, on Chinna Orampadu bypass road on the Cuddapah-Renigunta State Express highway in Obulavaripalle mandal in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased were -- Ramesh Bhonsle (38), Gangadhar Bhonsle (42), Anil Chindle (34), Thukam Bogan (55) and Chandrasekhar Raicker (50). They were proceeding from Maharashtra to Tirumala when the mishap occurred. Advance salary for teachers

HYDERABAD: The Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, on Tuesday agreed to a suggestion that a month's salary be paid as advance to teachers working in areas adjoining the districts where the Krishna Pushkarams are to be organised later this month. This decision was taken at a meeting convened in the Secretariat, according to a press release issued by the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers Union leaders -- B. Mohan Reddy and P. Sudhakar Reddy.

Power position comfortable

Hyderabad: The State has been placed in a comfortable power position following a significant improvement in hydel generation due to Srisailam inflows. Because of the improvement, the State was presently selling power worth Rs. 1 crore per day to other States through Power Trading Corporation, a Transco official said on Tuesday. The contribution made by hydel stations to the grid, which was 8 million units till the other day, had gone up to 40 mu following heavy output from Srisailam.

Crop loan melas from today

ANANTAPUR: Crop loan melas will be conducted at the branches of all banks in the district from August 18 to 22 to sanction loans to eligible farmers. The Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, has directed MROs, MPDOs and MAOs to act as coordinators between farmers and banks so that the farmers get loans. Special officers are being sent to mandals to supervise the melas.

Raghavulu flays lathicharge

HYDERABAD: The State unit of CPI(M) on Tuesday criticised the lathicharge and arrest of the employees of cooperative societies while they were picketing the Collectorates on Monday demanding job security and safeguarding of the cooperative sector. B.V. Raghavulu, secretary, in a statement on Tuesday called upon the Government to hold discussions with the employees' associations to ensure job security and to prevent loss of employment.

Protest day on August 25

HYDERABAD: The Indian Federation of Trade Unions has called for observance of nation-wide protest day on August 25 against the `anti-worker' policies of the United Progressive Alliance Government, besides reduction of interest rate of EPF deposits. D.V. Krishna, general secretary, IFTU national committee, in a statement issued here on Tuesday, asked workers to take part in demonstrations, rallies and protest meetings on August 25.

VHR donates salary to Care

Hyderabad: V. Hanumantha Rao, Rajya Sabha member, on Tuesday donated the first salary he received as Upper House member to the Little Hearts Foundation of Care Hospitals. He handed over a cheque for Rs. 25,850 to the Chairman of Care, B. Somaraju, and the Managing Director, K. V. Prasada Rao.

K.K. Rao new VSP Director

VISAKHAPATNAM: The incharge Executive Director (Works) of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, K.K. Rao, on Tuesday assumed charge as Director (Operations). Mr. Rao, an electrical engineer from Andhra University, began his career in VSP as a senior design engineer in 1981, after 13 years of service in Steel Authority of India Limited. He had held the positions of General Manager (Marketing) and GM (Works) and looked after the entire steel operations, production and maintenance as an incharge ED (Works), according to a release.

1.5 tonnes of red sanders seized

TIRUPATI: In two separate incidents, 1.5 tonnes of red sanders have been seized by the Forest Department. Acting on a tip-off, wildlife sleuths, led by the DFO, S. Krishnaiah, laid in wait at Nuthanakalva of K.V. Palle mandal for a car and after a hot chase for 15 km, the car was brought to a halt and 26 logs weighing 715 kg were seized. In another raid, flying squad personnel, led by the DFO, V. Shantaseela Babu, seized 39 logs weighing 860 kg from a jeep near Eendrapalli

crossroads on Yerpedu-Venkatagiri road. Thammisetty Ankaiah of Dakkili in Nellore and Thalathoti Krishnaiah of Penagalur in Cuddapah have been arrested.

BJP names zonal secretaries

HYDERABAD: The BJP State president, N. Indrasena Reddy, on Tuesday named four zonal organising secretaries in place of zonal observers. According to a press release here, the following are nominated as zonal secretaries for the districts mentioned against their names: V. Srinivas Naidu (Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Vizag corporation); G. Ravaindraraju (East Godavari, Rajahmundry corporation, West Godavari, Krishna, Vijayawada corporation, Guntur and Guntur corporation); K. Shyam Prasad (Hyderabad, Medak, Mahabubnagar, Kurnool and Kurnool corporation); and K. Koteswara Rao ( Ranga Reddy and State party office).

Kunavaram records 4 cm rainfall

Hyderabad: There was rain at a few places in Telangana on Tuesday while it was isolated in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Dummagudem and Kunavaram recorded a rainfall of 4 cm each while Kakinada recorded 3 cm. There will be isolated rain in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Wednesday.

Plastic surgery expert to visit SWIMS

TIRUPATI: Ambika Arasu, a consultant plastic surgeon in Chennai will be at SVIMS hospital as a visiting professor on August 21. The hospital has asked the public requiring plastic surgery to make use of the opportunity.

The Tirupati zonal office of Andhra Bank has donated a sophisticated Duplor equipment costing Rs.1.30 lakhs to the hospital.

Bank chairman felicitated

CUDDAPAH: The Rayalaseema Grameena Bank is competing with nationalised banks in serving customers besides taking part in social service activities, asserted its outgoing Chairman, Dinakar Rao, on Tuesday. Mr. Rao, who was promoted and posted to Manipal, was felicitated by its Director, M. Vivekananda Reddy, on Tuesday.

He asked the people to ensure savings through banks that would go a long way in the nation's progress. Mr. Vivekananda Reddy and the school principal, Lalitha Kumari, also felicitated the new RGB Chairman.

Award for AIDS awareness

NELLORE: G.V.R. Reddy, who is known for his innovative work in creating awareness about AIDS through exhibits made out of coconut shell, has received the district level best award for his AIDS control vision project.

He has been displaying the exhibits in a number of areas of the district during the last 3 years.

Shifting of hostel opposed

NELLORE: The relay hunger strike by students protesting against the shifting of backward classes boys' hostel from Chintavaram to Gudur, entered the 16th day on Tuesday.

Last week a number of students and voluntary associations staged a dharna on the national highway resulting in traffic jam for a few hours.
