CHENNAI, AUG. 17. A motorcyclist died after his vehicle was struck by a water tanker on the GST Road near Chromepet this morning. Police said V. Ravi (26) was going towards the city on his motorcycle when the water tanker hit him from behind, killing him on the spot. A medical representative, Ravi belonged to Wallajahbad near Kancheepuram and was staying in East Tambaram. The accident took place near an Anjaneyar temple. Traffic moves slowly between the Tambaram bus terminus and the Madras Export Processing Zone due to congestion. As the road becomes broader and gets less congested, drivers tend to speed, local residents say. Residents have taken to the streets on several occasions in the past calling for urgent steps to prevent accidents on the GST Road between Tambaram and Kathipara junction. Of the 500-odd people killed every year in road accidents in Chengai East, one-third of the fatalities take place in this stretch. They complain that the carriageway has shrunk due to accumulation of sand on the edges, poor illumination and encroachments. None of these problems has been addressed by government agencies, a residents' association representative said. The police said construction of central medians on the GST Road was on in full swing. Once that was completed, there would be a visible improvement and the accident rate would drop.
