Chimpanzee dies in Vandalur zoo

By P. Oppili

CHENNAI, AUG. 17. Victor (30), a chimpanzee in the Vandalur zoo, died a few days ago.

Post-mortem results revealed that the death was due to lung infection, zoo authorities said.

According to them, Victor was a donation from Honolulu Zoo in the U.S., along with a female chimp, Kempa, in 1985, in exchange for an elephant calf.

Victor had fathered two young ones and both babies were given to zoological parks in the country under the animal exchange programme.

During its last 20 days, Victor's food intake reduced drastically.

He refused to eat the fruits and other feed offered by the animal keeper.

Attempts by veterinarians to provide medicines to him also proved futile, they said stating that when offered a banana, in which medicines were hidden, Victor rejected the portion with the medicine.

Only a couple of months ago, Anand, another male chimpanzee, died at the zoo due to chronic amoebiasis.

With the death of both the males, Tun Tun, a female is left with no companion, added the authorities.
