CHENNAI, AUG. 17. Suburban train services in the Beach-Tiruvallur section were disrupted for more than three hours on Tuesday evening after two empty wagons of a freight train derailed near Washermanpet station in north Chennai. According to railway sources, the goods train had unloaded a ballast consignment (blue metal used in railways) at Royapuram station and was heading towards Renigunta in South Central Railways, when the accident occurred. Soon after passing the Washermanpet railway station, two wagons close to the engine derailed around 5 p.m., obstructing movement of the suburban electrical multiple unit services. A visit to the spot revealed that wheels of both the derailed wagons had come off the rails. Railway officials deployed hydraulic jacks to lift the metal section and the wheels in an attempt at re-railing them.
Services diverted
A section of commuters who travelled by a suburban service from Avadi to Beach (Departs from Avadi at 4.30 p.m.) complained that services were diverted to the suburban station at the Moore Market complex, Central Railway Station, without any prior announcement. After the train halted at the suburban station in the Moore Market Complex, the railway authorities made an announcement that the train would not go to Beach station and advised the commuters to go to Park Station to reach their destination. The railway sources said six services were affected in the Beach-Tiruvallur section due to the accident and some of the Beach-bound services were regulated en-route. Normality was restored in the section around 8 p.m.
