PM lauds role of free press
NEW DELHI,
AUG. 17.
The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today lauded the role of a free press in the country, saying ``by voicing the voice of the voiceless, they (the press) become a force for good''.
Speaking at a function at his residence where he received the first copy of the Delhi edition of Malayala Manorama, the first Malayalam newspaper to start publication from the capital, he said the press was a great help in improving democracy and governance.
The Prime Minister said that for more than a century the paper has had a glorious record of remaining in the forefront of Indian journalism. Earlier, Managing Editor Philip Mathew said it was a dream come true for the Malayali diaspora. "It is an Onam gift to the Malayalis of the capital'', he said. UNI
