Special package for powerloom sector sought

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, AUG. 17. A special package should be announced by the State Government for the powerloom sector similar to the one announced by the Maharashtra Government, M. Senthil Kumar, Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) chairman, has appealed.

He was speaking at a seminar on "Sustainable Growth of Decentralised Powerloom Sector through Hi-Tech Weaving Park" held here recently. Mr. Senthil Kumar said such a package (which would include power tariff concession and reduction of Sales Tax on textiles) would help the development of the powerloom units in the State. The Hi-Tech Weaving Park projects, initiated by the Council, would help increase the per capita income of the powerloom weavers. Four such parks were planned at Palladam, Komarapalayam, Erode and Andipatti.

Land identified

Totally, 212 acres had been identified and about 155 acres acquired so far. A total of 2,700 looms were likely to be installed in the parks. The proposals had been submitted to the State Government under the Textile Centre Infrastructure Development Scheme (TCIDS).
