Udavum Karangal seeks medical help

By V.S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE, AUG 17. A 30-year old mentally challenged person was brought, chained, today to the Udavum Karangal, a service organisation in the City, with bruises all over his body.

He has been identified as B. Sakthivel (30) from Sozhavandan near Madurai. "The patient is paranoid but is very much in touch with reality but he gets into aggressive and violent behaviour frequently in depression", pointed out S. Vidyakaar of Udavum Karangal. "In the absence of respect from society including his wife, not being blessed with children and lack of emotional support besides relatives including parents abandoning him has pushed him to the wall emotionally", Mr.Parasuram, Administrative Officer said.

Deserted by relatives

The mental disorder turned acute when his wife deserted him, according to the psychiatrists .

Having been treated in various places of worship in a chained condition and unable to bear the injuries caused, Sakthivel escaped and landed in Coimbatore. A social worker stumbled on him at the Railway Station and brought him to Udavum Karangal.

Refused entry

The social worker lamented that in spite of his willingness to pay the cost, hotels and food kiosks refused entry for the patient. Such humiliations had hurt him making him aggressive towards fellow beings.

Mr.Vidyaakar appealed to the hospitals with psychiatric treatment facilities to provide asylum to the patient and treat him. Until then, Udavum Karangal would provide food and shelter. After observing and befriending him, the chain would be first loosened and then removed completely in a phased way. If the hospitals provided him required medical care, Udavum Karangal would be ready to provide him post-treatment rehabilitation, he said.
