Guntur
By Our Staff Reporter
GUNTUR, AUG. 17. Thirteen students, including six girls, were taken into custody for trying to obstruct counselling for admission to the nursing course at the Government General Hospital here on Tuesday. The students, owing allegiance to the Students' Federation of India, have been agitating at the hospital for the past three days seeking justice for those who have completed the multi-purpose health workers (female) course at the Intermediate level while admitting candidates for the staff nursing course in the Guntur Medical College. The admission process was partly completed at Andhra Medical College three days ago, but the admitted students had to show their certificates and get the final approval at the GGH on Tuesday. The talks with the GGH Superintendent on the issue failed and the police rounded up the agitating students. The SFI State secretary, Jayaprakash, while condemning the `high-handed' behaviour of the police, said the students were agitating peacefully for a genuine cause. The students were kept in Kothapeta and Old Guntur police stations.
