VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 17. Of late, stray cattle creating traffic bottlenecks at busy lanes and by-lanes has become a regular spectacle in the city. It appears the problem is yet to get listed as priority item by the civic authorities. Though there is an established system to catch stray cattle and leave them either on the outskirts of the city or impose a fine up to Rs. 250 on those who claim their ownership, it is not being implemented seriously. There are a few cases where stray cattle don the role of traffic cops at important junctions. Whenever they run amok vehicle users as well as pedestrians always find themselves at the receiving end. ``In One Town area, in every street you will find stray cattle occupying a major portion. Their presence leaves little place in the by-lanes for the movement of vehicles,'' K. Rama Rao, a resident of Woodward Street, said. When contacted, the Chief Medical Officer, Satyanarayana Raju, said they were taking action on receipt of specific complaints. "Sometimes, we engage private persons to catch stray cattle,'' he said and appealed to the people to alert the civic staff whenever they face any problem.
