Temperature

TIRUCHI, AUG. 17. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 36.0 degree Celsius and a minimum of 27.9 degree Celsius.

Hunt on

for man

The police are on the lookout for a middle-aged man, who reportedly attempted to encash two `travellers cheques' of denominations of 100 dollars each, at the State Bank of India, today.

Official sources said, Terance Sayowl, said to belong to Colombo, gave a slip to the bank authorities after learning that the latter were making enquiries to determine the genuineness of the cheques. In a hurry, he had left his passport at the bank.

However, the local address he had furnished to the bank authorities was found to be fake.

The bank officials told the police that the same person had drawn Rs. 32,060 on August 11 presenting an American Express cheque for 700 US Dollars.

Prizes given

M. Sasikala of the Bishop Heber College won the Independence Day Tamil essay writing competition for the youths on the topic "India in my perception" conducted by the Tiruchi station of the All India Radio recently.

M. Sakthivel of the Government Law College, Tiruchi, won the second place, while the third place was shared by A. K. Rajaram of the Government Law College, Tiruchi, and J. Daisy Rani of Machuvadi, Pudukottai.

S. Gopalakrishnan of Agasthiar Book Depot gave away the prizes during the Independence Day celebrations held at the AIR station premises on Monday, in the presence of the Station Director of the AIR, K. Vageesh. Prof. N. Seshadri offered felicitations.

Grievance meet

The farmers' grievances day meeting will be held at the Collectorate conference hall in the city on August 20. In a press release here today, the Collector, V. Pandian, called upon farmers to participate in the meeting and air their grievances.

Regional-level camp

An exclusive regional-level camp for the selection of children for the Bal Shree Award instituted by the National Bal Bhavan will be held on August 29 at the Puthur Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School in the city.

Students from the districts of Tiruchi, Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur are eligible to participate in the camp.

The students can participate in activities like creative science, creative writing, creative performance and creative art events and exhibit their talents.

In a press release, the Assistant Director of Art and Culture, R. Gunasekaran, said one student in each event could participate in the camp. They should produce the certificate issued by the head of the school concerned.
