Demonstration

Members of the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers' Federation today staged a demonstration, condemning the police "assault" on students belonging to the Students Federation of India in Chennai on August 6.

They urged the Government to take action against the police personnel involved in the assault on students "when they went to present a memorandum to the Director of School Education requesting action on their demands."

Listing out various demands, the secretary, R. Singappan, said the students were "attacked wrongfully" when the Government was actually supposed to have looked into the demands that were of "much significance" to the education system.

He demanded filling-up of vacancies in schools and colleges, stopping collection of capitation fees and making available textbooks for students without any shortage.

Mr. Singappan alleged that the fire tragedy at the Kumbakonam school only reflected commercialisation of education, as some of the aided and private schools functioned without following regulations.

He said the Government should cancel the recognition of those aided schools that were involved in misusing the money they received as grant from it.
