NEW DELHI, AUG. 17. With the Delhi University Students' Union elections drawing near, student organisations are gearing up and along with promises, the usual rallies and strikes have also been announced. While the National Students' Union of India is organising a "Chatra Chetna Rally" on Wednesday to "draw the attention of University administration towards problems faced by students in Delhi University", the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad has called for a "total bandh" of the University on Thursday. "We have called for this total bandh and we will ensure that the University will not open on Thursday. While there are other issues as well, it is the attitude of the Vice-Chancellor that is not acceptable. Everyone, including teachers and students, are upset with him. He has even stopped meeting the student leaders," said the ABVP State secretary, Nakul Bhardwaj, at a press conference today. The other issues raised by the ABVP included declaration of results of all the examinations within 45 days, provision of U-Specials to all colleges and acceptance of student bus-passes in all buses and adequate security arrangements in all colleges to control the elements who misbehave with girl students. Appointment of a full-time Dean of Students Welfare, establishment of placement cell, shuttle bus-service for South Campus Colleges are among other issues taken up by the ABVP. Insisting that these issues had not come to the forefront because of elections, Nakul said: "We have been working on these issues through the year. We have not picked them up only because of the elections but yes, we are putting them forward right now because this is the time." Meanwhile, the NSUI is busy presenting a "clean" image to voters. The organisation has asked for a signed declaration stating that there were no cases pending against the aspirants and a report of activities by the aspirant. "A seven-member screening committee will be interviewing all the 38 aspirants. The main points of consideration of candidates will be academic credentials, capacity to lead, moral and social character and social acceptance. After the interviews, the Screening Committee will hand over the recommendations to our national president," elaborated the NSUI national spokesperson, Kuntal Krishna, at a separate press conference.
