But after leaving their house on Monday night, they did not turn up, and having waited till forenoon Tuesday, their relatives grew suspicious and went to the farm looking for them.

They saw the body of Govindan with severe head injuries and the body of Rajalakshmi in a well about a kilometre from there.

In a clash between two groups of fishermen, Velu (35), was done to death, and nine others suffered injuries at Ekkiarkuppam near Marakkanam.

The police said rivalry existed between the groups led by Sekar and Subramanian over fishing rights. The enmity came to a head when Subramanian conducted the local festival without involving Sekar.
