NAMAKKAL, AUG. 18. Abject poverty and attendant odds could not deter this Boyar girl from a remote Namakkal village from pursuing her dream of rendering medical service to the downtrodden. Her parents earn a paltry wage working in a stone quarry, but could never meet her needs for higher studies. Kamatchi never thought for a moment that entering the medical profession was a daunting task. Her parents, Babu (48) and Rasammal (44), break stones to keep the wolf from the door, leave alone educate her. However, Kamatchi shone all through her career and scored 1,133 out of 1,200 in the higher secondary examinations. She secured centum in physics, chemistry and biology. At a recent counselling, she was allotted a seat in the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem. The tuition, hostel and other fees are just beyond her parents' means. "Many including my school teacher, N. Karuppannan, and benefactor, the police Inspector, G. Vijayaraghavan, have helped me continue my studies thus far. Now carrying the increased financial burden is going to be a daunting task for me'', says a thankful Kamatchi, feeling indebted to her benefactors. Kamatchi's inspiration is her elder brother, Palanisamy, now a second year medico at the Coimbatore Medical College, who also dared poverty. Kamatchi hopes that well-meaning persons would support her in her medical "mission".
