Arms seized, three held

TUTICORIN, AUG. 18. The Tuticorin police have seized a 9 mm pistol, two live cartridges and two sickles and arrested three persons hailing from Tharuvaikulam, about 10 km from here.

Speaking to reporters here today, the Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Rai Rathore, said A. Thangapazham (59), R. Jayam alias Antony Jayam Sahayaraj (44) and R. Bhaskar (30) of Fishermen Colony, also in Tharuvaikulam, were moving around suspiciously near the market. When the sub-inspector of police of Tuticorin South Police Station, M. Hariharan, stopped and frisked them, he found the firearm and the deadly weapons in their possession. They were arrested and remanded to custody.

During interrogation, Mr. Thangapazham reportedly told the police that he had bought the pistol from Karate Selwyn in 1997 for Rs. 50,000 for his safety when he had been lodged in the Palayamkottai Central Prison along with the late gangster after being arrested in connection with a murder case under the Tharuvaikulam police station limits.

Mr. Rathore also said two rowdies, A. Rajkumar (35) of Krishnarajapuram and S. Arumugasamy (40) were arrested under the Goondas Act as the duo were involved in various criminal cases under Tuticorin North Police station limits.

A special police team of Kovilpatti recovered 92 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs. 65,000 in cash and arrested the burglar, S. Kumar alias Thajudeen (28) of K. Pudur in Madurai district.

On the installation of new traffic signals, Mr. Rathore said digital traffic signals were being installed at Millerpuram Junction, Chidambara Nagar West - Tuticorin-Palayamkottai Road Junction and Ambedkar Statue Junction, each at the cost of Rs. 3 lakhs. Proposals for the installation of medians near Esakkiamman temple near VOC College, near Cruz Fernandez Statue, on Tiruchendur Road near Ambedkar Statue and on Tiruchendur Road near Thoppu Street in Muthiahpuram. "These works will be completed with the help of private sponsors," he said, adding that efforts were on to erect sufficient numbers of cautionary and information sign boards with the support of private sponsors.
