Temperature

TIRUCHI, AUG.18 . The city today registered a maximum temperature of 38.2 degree Celsius and a minimum of 26.2 degree Celsius.

Found dead

A 78-year-old businessman was found dead in a compartment of the Chennai-Erode Express here today.

The railway police identified him as Murugappa Chettiyar of Devakottai, a financier in Chennai and said he died of heart attack.

Imprisonment

The Fast Track Court I today sentenced a youth, accused in a murder case, to five years imprisonment, and imposed a fine of Rs. 500 on him.

Gopi hacked Suresh Kumar of Mariamman Koil Street, Pappakurichi, to death on July 31, 2003, owing to enmity. Gopi's accomplices, Selvaraj and Amarnath, were punished with fines of Rs. 350 and Rs. 200 respectively by the Judge, S. Solaimalai.

Hearing put off

The hearing of a case registered against the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, in the District Munsif Court by functionaries of the Congress and the DMK, over her description of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, as a foreign national during the campaign for Lok Sabha elections, has been posted to September 10.

The party functionaries stated in their complaint that the Chief Minister had committed contempt of court since Ms. Sonia Gandhi's citizenship had already been confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Agitation

Eighty members of the Town Panchayat Employees' Association, including 20 women, today conducted an agitation near Chintamani, protesting the State Government's order downgrading town panchayats into village panchayats.

Youth held

A youth was caught red-handed while attempting to steal Rs.5,000 from a bus passenger, Bose, on Tuesday. V. Prasangi (19) of Villivakkam in Chennai was caught by the public and handed over to the Gandhi Market police.

Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to having stolen Rs. 60,000 from another person in the city recently. A sum of Rs. 40,000 was recovered. The youth was arrested and remanded to custody.

Case against 75 persons

The city police have registered 75 cases against traffic offenders on Tuesday and collected fines to the tune of Rs. 8,500, according to police sources.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 92.95 feet today. The inflow was 11,275 cusecs and the discharge 16,737 cusecs.
