Belgaum

BELGAUM, AUG. 19. A few senior advocates here mistook a black grinding stone on Club Road for a Shivalinga on Thursday. With the recent communal violence in the city fresh in their memory, they informed the media that some miscreants had uprooted the stone from a temple and thrown it on the roadside. One of them told The Hindu that the pictures of the stone had been sent to archaeological experts. The archaeological expert had also visited the spot and found that the stone resembled a Shivalinga. When asked, the advocate agreed that they had not seen the bottom of the stone which had a hole used to fix a handle for grinding. Also, the base was typical of the stones used for grinding purposes in homes and small hotels/restaurants. He preferred to wait for the final report from archaeological experts. The Superintendent of Police, Hemant Nimbalkar, rushed to the spot and thoroughly inspected the stone. He declared that it was only an ordinary grinding stone. It is suspected that the grinding stone had fallen down while being transported and somebody had kept it aside so that it did not obstruct traffic.
