By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 19. The 60th birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, on Friday will be marked by functions across the capital, including the unveiling of his statue near Parliament House and the release of a postage stamp.

The day has also been declared the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES). The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has selected a social worker from Kerala, Aneena Joseph Mathew, for the Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Award for 2003.

Ms. Mathew, who is the executive secretary of Aswasa Bhavan — a reform centre in Kottayam — has been chosen in recognition of her outstanding services for the rehabilitation of wounded and rejected children.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs. one lakh, a silver plaque and a citation. It will be given away by the Minister of State for HRD, Kanti Singh.
