Urs award for Ganapathiappa

SHIMOGA Aug. 19. H. Ganapathiappa (in picture), octogenarian freedom fighter and one of the frontline leaders of the Kagodu Satyagraha in Sagar taluk of Shimoga district, the first agrarian movement in India after Independence, has been chosen for this year's prestigious Devaraj Urs Memorial Award in appreciation of his contribution to public life. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will present the award to Mr. Ganapathiappa at a function at the Banquet Hall of the Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore on Friday. The Shantaveri Gopalagowda Samajawadi Adhyayana Kendra Trust, with which Mr. Ganapathiappa has been actively associated, has expressed its happiness at the Government's decision to honour him, though belatedly.

Lorry strike from midnight

BANGALORE Aug. 19. The associations affiliated to the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents' Associations said today that they would participate in the truckers' strike demanding withdrawal of the proposed service tax, which would start on Saturday. Addressing presspersons here today, their representatives described as misleading the statement of Channa Reddy, president of Karnataka Federation of Lorry Owners' Associations, that lorry owners would not take part in the strike.

Tankers exempted: Mr. Shanmugappa said about 10,000 tankers transporting petroleum products and 3,500 tankers supplying milk had been exempted from the strike following an appeal from the Government. Agents all over the State had stopped booking goods, and lorries would stop plying from Friday midnight, he said.

Governor to visit Kollur

Udupi Aug. 19. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, will visit Kollur in Udupi district on Friday, according to a press release. The release said that the Governor would arrive at Kollur at 6 p.m. on Friday and offer prayers at the Mookambika Temple. He would stay at Kollur for the night and leave for the Mangalore airport at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, the release added.

Airport to continue operations

BANGALORE Aug. 19. The Centre has said that the operations at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) Airport here will continue even after the proposed Bangalore International Airport becomes functional. According to a release from the Press Information Bureau, the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, gave this information in a written reply to K.B. Krishna Murthy, Rajya Sabha member. However, he said that in case the HAL Airport was closed down, the cost of the closure would be made good to HAL.

Reservoir almost full

BELLARY AUG. 19. The water level in the Tungabhadra reservoir at Hospet touched 1,632.56 feet as against the full reservoir level of 1,633 feet. Water is being released into the river through the crest gates.

As per the readings taken on Thursday, the inflow into the reservoir was 43,664 cusecs and the outflow was 40,841 cusecs. The storage is 109.772 tmcft as against the full capacity of 130 tmcft.

Last year on the same day, the level of the reservoir stood at 1,616.29 feet with 54.673 tmcft of water. The inflow was 11,939 cusecs and outflow was 4,665 cusecs.

Convicted

DAVANGERE AUG. 19. The Davangere District Court here has convicted Channabasappa of raping a 12-year-old girl and sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10,000. The court also sentenced four others who assisted Channabasappa in committing the crime to six months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1,000.

Channabasappa raped the girl at a flourmill in Koolambi village in Honnali taluk in 2001.

Dead

HASSAN AUG. 19. A pedestrian died after being hit by a lorry in Arkalgud town on Thursday.

The police identified the victim as Shiva (40). According to the police, the lorry hit him when he was trying to cross the tank bed area in the town.

The Arkalgud Town Police have registered a case.

Service tax

Raichur Aug. 19. Members of the Raichur City Photographers/Videographers' Welfare Association have urged the Union Government to withdraw the service tax imposed on photographers.

They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, G.N. Nayak, appealing to the State Government to take up the issue with the Union Government, to safeguard the interests of small and medium photographers and videographers. They urged the Union Government to abolish the service tax on photographers.

Registration

MADIKERI Aug. 19. The Kodagu Deputy Commissioner, Srikant Valagad, has asked the people of the district to register births and deaths for obtaining certain individual benefits and social security. He was presiding over a meeting of the births and deaths registration coordination committee, an official press release said here on Thursday. Birth certificates would help get school admission for children, in employment, obtaining driving licence, while signing legal documents, marriages, securing PDS cards and so on, he said. Missing

SIRSI AUG. 19. Mohammad Saab Abdul Wahab Sheik (14), a boy from Sonda, has been missing since July 29, according to a complaint registered by his mother, Bitulinisa Abdul Wahab Sheik, on Wednesday at Sirsi Police Station. The boy was running a shop selling groundnuts on Natraj Road here.

He is four-ft tall, dark complexioned and speaks Kannada and Urdu.
