CUDDAPAH, AUG. 19. Victimisation of girl students, eve-teasing and ragging became rampant due to the fall in moral and cultural values, said the Professor of Central Institute for English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Sonia Gupta, on Thursday.
Legislations
Speaking at a seminar on `attacks on girl students, eve teasing and ragging - role of the Government', Prof. Gupta urged the Government to initiate stringent punitive action against criminal acts against girl students. The Government enacted several legislations to curb these crimes against girl students and dowry harassment of women, but their implementation was tardy, she alleged. Finding fault with the television channels, she alleged that they misguided innocent youth by exaggerated portrayal of love and violence. Featured film-makers shed their social responsibility due to growing commercial interests, she alleged. She also flayed the Censor Boards for liberally passing films, which needlessly portrayed obscenity and violence, corrupting young minds.
Role of media
Ragging and eve teasing have become a daily feature all over and hence the Government, police machinery, students' organisations and the media must play a responsible role, Prof. Sonia Gupta advised. She lamented the brutal and fatal attacks on Lakshmiprasanna in Guntur, Srilakshmi in Vijayawada, Taslima Banu in Nellore, Jyothirmayi and Bhargavai in Hyderabad. She advised girl students to unitedly and boldly fight eve teasing and ragging. The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, deplored the growing ragging and eve-teasing and suggested formation of anti-ragging committees in each college. He assured stringent action against the accused if such instances were brought to his notice. The Additional SP, M. Lakshmi Reddy, assured stringent action if the police were informed on the toll-free phone No. 1090, in cases of ragging. He asked the girl students to defend themselves boldly and seek police assistance whenever needed.
