Anantapur
By Our Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR, AUG. 19. The president of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the leader of Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has observed that the attitude of the Congress Government towards killing of rival partymen is threatening the very existence of political parties, particularly the TDP. Addressing a press conference here today he said they had stalled the proceedings of the Assembly repeatedly to bring pressure on the Government to prevent it from proceeding with its dangerous agenda, though some people were bewildered with the TDP attitude.
Retaliatory attitude
There was no let up in the retaliatory attitude of the Congress Government though the TDP had represented to the Chief Minister, the Governor, the Prime Minister and the President. The carelessness of the State Government on law and order was evident when killing of TDP activists had taken place in Anantapur district, even when a TDP delegation was on the visit to the district to console the families of partymen killed a day before, he stated.
Police harassment
The TDP activists and leaders were being harassed by the police by conducting raids on their residences indiscriminately, foisting cases and resorting to all sorts of suppressive measures. The Congress leaders were trying to weaken their TDP rivals economically by destroying their properties and morally by attacking their homes, Mr. Naidu explained. Mr. Naidu adviced the Congress Government to use the mandate given to it for development of the State and not for vengeance on the TDP. Instituting 12 inquiries already on the deeds of TDP rule spoke volumes of the Congress attitude. Further, the TDP president alleged that the Government was trying to cow down TDP activists by cancelling fair price shop dealerships, cancelling the cheque power of some sarpanches, changing the mid-day meal contracts and management of anganwadi centres.
`Provocation'
Taking strong exception to the Chief Minister's provocation of Congressmen from Penukonda and Gooty, who were taken to him yesterday, Mr. Naidu observed that asking them to take the names of leaders by whom they were allegedly victimised indicated weakness of the leadership. He also criticised Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy for terming the killings of TDP men as the result of factional and personal feuds. Whether the Chief Minister wanted to indicate encouragement to retaliation by saying so, Mr. Naidu sought to know.
