Nagarjunasagar water released for canals
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD,
AUG.19.
Water was released into the right bank canal of Nagarjunasagar project late on Wednesday night following improvement in the dam's storage. This was late by two months.
Sources in the Government maintained that the opening of the right bank canal at this juncture was purely for meeting the drinking water needs of several villages and towns en route such as Ongole, Chilakaluripet and Sattenapalli. The water was not for any irrigation purpose, the sources said. The waters would take eight days to reach these towns, covering a distance of 300 km.
The decision for opening the left bank canal and increasing the outflows into the right bank canal, both for irrigation purpose, would be taken in one or two days. The Government did not want to open the left canal even for drinking purpose because Nalgonda, Miryalaguda and some others had an alternative source, Devulapalli tank. The needs of Khammam were being met by Palair reservoir.
