NIZAMABAD, AUG. 19. The district excise police nabbed two persons, Ankapur Asha Goud of Mothe in Velpur mandal and N. Ganesh of Lakshmapur in Jakranpally mandal, under the Preventive Detention Act for brewing and selling illicit liquor. Announcing this to mediapersons here on Thursday, the Excise Superintendent, Chandrasekhar Rao, said the excise police as per the instructions of the district Collector arrested the habitual offenders under the PD Act and later shifted them to the Chanchalguda Central Prison. Asha Goud earlier had five excise cases against him, while Ganesh had three, he said. Mr. Rao said in the current financial year, 1,629 excise cases were booked and 505 persons were arrested so far. Of them, 309 were ID cases in which as many as 274 were arrested. About 3,925 litres of illicit liquor was recovered from them. A huge quantity-1.70 lakh litres of wash was recovered and 598 cases registered. As regards the toddy adulteration, 19 cases were booked, as many shops sealed and 26 offenders rounded up. About 3,000 litres of chloral hydrate was seized after the two persons were arrested, he said and claimed that ganja cultivation was completely prevented in the district. However, 44 persons were taken into custody when they were smuggling out the contraband from Medak and Karimnagar through the district. In all, Rs.50 lakh worth of ganja was recovered, Mr. Rao said.
