YSR to release draft youth policy today

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will release the draft youth policy for the public at 8.30 a.m. at Ravindra Bharati on Friday seeking suggestions up to November 1.

The policy, which will be finalised after this exercise incorporating the best points from among the public suggestions, will, however, be known as `Rajiv Yuva Shakti.' The new name was approved by the Cabinet at its meeting. The Minister for Information and Public Relations, Mohd. Ali Shabbir, told reporters later that youth organisations, bankers and NGOs would participate in the Ravindra Bharati meeting.

Referring to the criticism made by the former Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, in this regard, Mr. Shabbir spoke of how Rs. 10 crores of Central funds meant for youth welfare got lapsed because of the negligence by the previous regime.

Srisailam third floodgate opened

KURNOOL: The third floodgate of Srisailam was opened on Thursday evening increasing the total discharge into the river through the spillway to 80,370 cusecs. The total discharge from the reservoir was 1,56,747 cusecs which includes 23,999 cusecs for right bank powerhouse, 42,378 cusecs for left bank power house, 10,000 cusecs for the Srisailam right main canal through Pothireddypady head regulator. The inflow into the reservoir was 2.40 lakh cusecs which included 56,000 cusecs from the Tungabhadra river.

Meanwhile, the level in the reservoir stood at 882.10 ft accounting for a storage of 247.327 tmcft.

Farm labourers held

Kakinada: Seventy-two agricultural labourers, including 22 women owing allegiance to the CPI (ML) Liberation, were arrested by the Indrapalem police when they `tresspassed' in to a private land measuring 8.8 acres at Madhavapatnam village near here on Thursday.

According to the police, the workers have been demanding takeover of the land from the lessee and distribution among them.

Technology institute entrance test

HYDERABAD: The Common Entrance Test of the Regency Institute of Technology (RIT), Yanam, originally scheduled for August 7 last, will now be conducted at 10 a.m. on August 23 at the institute.

All the candidates, who have been registered by the Convenor, Common Entrance Test, are required to collect their hall tickets from RIT, Yanam, according to a press note issued by the Principal. The test was earlier postponed under the orders of the Madras High Court.

Jailed in murder case

BHIMAVARAM: The District Fast Track Court Judge, B. Srinivasa Rao, in his verdict here on Thursday awarded 12-year imprisonment to P. Chiranjeevi and P. Chinna, brothers, in connection with the murder of I. Prasada Rao at Undrupet in Shrungavruksham of Palakoderu mandal on April 23, 1998.

The Judge also asked the two brothers to undergo an additional three-month general imprisonment if they failed to pay Rs. 100 each.

According to the prosecution, the two brothers eliminated Prasada Rao for informing the excise officials of their involvement in the sale of ID liquor.

MPs' team meets Union Minister

NEW DELHI: A delegation of Andhra Pradesh MPs on Thursday called on the Minister for Commerce and Industry, E.V.K. S. Elangovan, and urged him to intervene and approve the `out of court' settlement in the case by the Tobacco Board against tobacco growers of the State.

The delegation, consisting of Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, Magunta Srinivasa Reddy, Mekapati Raj Mohan Reddy, and growers said that the long-pending issue should be settled in which the growers were fined for raising crops during `crop holiday' during 2001-02. The Minister, the delegation said, reacted positively with the proposal of 5 per cent penalty and Rs. 2 per kilogram penalty to be paid by the peasants as part of the settlement process.

Selected for global award

CUDDAPAH: A Professor of Civil Engineering in the KSRM College of Engineering here, Nekkanti Kumara Swamy, has been chosen for the Living Science Award for his services to the field of science by the International Biographical Centre at Cambridge in the UK.

Dr. Kumara Swamy was being conferred the award for his contributions to studies on generation of electricity from sewage water, cleaning of hospital waste and maintaining ecological balance. He authored two books on engineering and published 56 research papers in national and international scientific journals.

Dr. Kumara Swamy said he was organising a national workshop on environmental pollution on August 26, sponsored by All-India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi, at the KSRM College of Engineering here.

BJYM executive bodies

HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha decided in a meeting on Wednesday to set up executive bodies in all districts between August 20 and September 20. It also decided that office bearers would extensively tour the districts to supervise constitution of the panels. A BJP press release said the BJP State vice-president, S.V. Seshagiri Rao, who attended, has been named Chairman of Water Resources cell of the State unit of the party.

Award presented

HYDERABAD: The Chairman, Satyam Computer Services Ltd., B. Ramalinga Raju, was presented the `Pragna Puraskar' for excellence in IT by the Chief Justice of the High Court, Devender Gupta, at a function held here on Thursday. The award was instituted by Pragna Bharati.

Later Mr. Raju released a book titled `India: Explorations,' a collection of 60 articles written by the Chairman of Pragna Bharati, T. H. Chowdary.

Two farmers end lives

ADILABAD: Bakkanna (35) of Pembi village in Khanapur mandal consumed pesticide on Thursday evening and died while being shifted to Khanapur hospital. T. Rooprao (42) of Pendalwada consumed pesticide on Thursday and died while being brought to the Government headquarters hospital, Adilabad. Reports said the farmers were ridden with debt.

Plea to solve varsity problems

HYDERABAD: The Secretary of the State Committee of the CPI (M), B. V. Raghavulu, has appealed to the Minister for Higher Education, P. Venkateswara Rao, to solve problems faced by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the Andhra University and order an enquiry against the University Vice Chancellor.

Medicos seek stipend hike

KURNOOL: The Director of Medical Education (DME), Sasiprabha, was gheraoed by junior doctors here on Thursday.

According to reports, the DME who arrived here to participate in the `freshers day' programme was mobbed by junior doctors, who demanded enhancement of stipend.

As the medicos remained unrelenting despite the clarification that the matter was a policy decision requiring the intervention of the Government, she returned without taking part in the function.

Lecture on Wodehouse

KURNOOL: The Department of English at Government degree college organised a lecture on "The Humour of P.G. Wodehouse'' here on Wednesday. The retired professor, K.S.S. Sarma, delivered the talk on the subject.

United Janata Dal dharna

CUDDAPAH: The United Janata Dal (UJD) functionaries staged dharna in front of the Collectorate on Thursday alleging distribution of sub-standard commodities through the Public Distribution System, which were posing health hazards to the poorer sections.

The party's district president, A. Yesanna, alleged that rice distributed through fair price shops in Cuddapah and Proddatur municipalities was unfit for consumption and similar rice was being supplied for the mid-day meals scheme.

Collector holds video-conference

NELLORE: The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, has said that under the comprehensive land development scheme, necessary blocks with 200 acres have been identified in all the 46 mandals of the district.

Woman ends life

NELLORE: A housewife, V. Anjamma (19), reportedly committed suicide, by setting herself ablaze in Naidupet town of Nellore district on Thursday.

According to police, she was married about 4 months ago.

According to the complaint received by police, she doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze, when her husband was away from home.

Blood donation camp

MADANAPALLE: Madanapalle Rotary Club and State Bank of India, Angallu branch, organised a blood donation camp at Sripathi Degree College on Tuesday. The camp was held under the auspicious of the Indian Red Cross Society Bangalore.
