By Our Staff Reporter,
NELLORE, AUG.19. The former Information Minister, S. Chandramohan Reddy, has lashed out at State Government for its `lukewarm attitude' towards factional murders and took exception to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's remarks in this regard. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said the Government was adopting double standards on the spree of murders committed in Anantapur district. He pointed that when such unfortunate incidents occurred earlier, Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy used to describe them as `political'. Now he had changed tune and started describing the incidents as due to `old factions'.
Collusion alleged
Mr. Chandramohan Reddy alleged that the way the murders were being committed, clearly exposed the collusion between the police and the Congress party. "The police did not even attempt to shift the injured to hospitals," he alleged. The former Minister charged Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy with attempting to turn the State into yet another Bihar. Though 23 Telugu Desam functionaries were murdered during the last three months in the district, no sincere effort was made to prevent recurrence of such crime, he said. Referring to suicides by farmers, he pointed that the Congress party, which made a hue and cry over previous incidents, was not rendering proper assistance to the 900 farmers who had ended their lives during the last three months.
No assurance on water
He also questioned Government's silence on bringing water to Somasila reservoir though sufficient water was available in Srisailam project. Though the power position was said to be favourable, there was no assurance of supply for nine hours to farmers. Mr. TDP leader expressed concern over the alarming shortage of drinking water in the district and lack of follow up measures to ease the situation. On the 9th phase of the rural infrastructure development programme, he alleged that though Rs.7 crores was allotted long ago, not a single work had been taken up so far in the district.
