TIRUPATI. Aug. 19. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has given a pat to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), a super specialities hospital, being run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) here on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. `Kudos' for SVIMS from the Chief Minister came at the meeting of the hospital's governing council (GC) held recently at Hyderabad in the chamber of the Chief Minister who is also the ex-officio chairman of the council. According to a release, the Chief Minister was particularly impressed by SWIMS netting Rs.15 crores during the last five years and giving Rs.1.5 crores from it as concession to patients falling under the `below the poverty line' (BPL) category. "Good, you should do better'' was his remarks when the Director of the Institute, G. Subramanyam, completed his presentation at the meeting.
Services extended
The council, after deliberations on the cliff-hanger over the headship of SVIMS, decided that the incumbent Director, G. Subramanyam, be allowed to hold the fort till November, 2006, when his second term of three years would end. The chairman of the council was said to have taken the view that since the service contract of the director and other retired faculty under question would end between 2005 and 2006, the Government need not `disturb' them now. The council suggested that whenever there a regular professor was appointed, the retired professor could be considered as the academic head for the Medical Council of India (MCI) purposes while the regular professor would hold the administrative responsibilities.
Central funds
On seeking funds from the Central Government for further development of SVIMS, Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy favoured using the services of T. Subbirami Reddy, the TTD Trust Board Chairman, as he could use his clout in Delhi as the member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). He asked SVIMS to submit to the Central Government proposals seeking grants so that Mr. Reddy could follow them up at Delhi.
Oncology unit
The meeting decided to set up the oncology unit with linear accelerator in SVIMS and consider enhancing the seats in the B.Sc. (Nursing) course being offered by the institute.
