HYDERABAD, AUG. 19. The additional 45 MGD of the full complement of 90 MGD water envisaged under the first phase of the Krishna drinking water supply project to the twin cities will be realised only by December 2005, the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board Managing Director, B. P. Acharya, has said.
System not ready
Only 33 MGD were being drawn now of the planned intake of 45 MGD in the first stage of phase one with the distribution network in parts of the city not equipped to take in the full load, he said here on Thursday. "Though we can draw the entire lot of 45 MGD under stage one of the project's first phase, it will be a futile exercise as the system is not ready," he explained. Internal transmission pipelines were being laid along the 8.5 km Sahebnagar-Autonagar route and 6.5 km Chandrayangutta-Jahanuma areas. Work would be completed by mid-September to enable them utilise the remaining 12 MGD.
Increased capacity
Stage II of the first phase of the project is intended to increase the capacity by another 45 MGD at a cost of about Rs. 400 crores. This includes increasing the capacity of water treatment units and adding more pumping units at Kodandapur and additional storage capacities for en route reservoirs. "The pumping units will be ready by March, 2005 enabling us to draw an additional 10 MGD, bringing the total volume of Krishna water to 55 MGD," he informed.
Separate grid
"We want to create a separate Krishna grid in the city bringing together all the areas served by it," Mr. Acharya said. Krishna water covers about 45 per cent of the HMWSSB service area as on date.
