Carlos Moya crashes out

ATHENS, AUG. 19. Men's third seed Carlos Moya of Spain crashed out of the Olympics singles tournament, beaten by the Chilean Nicolas Massu 6-2, 7-5 at the quarterfinal stage on Thursday.

Countryman Fernando Gonzalez also progressed into the semifinals with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over eighth seed Sebastien Grosjean of France ensuring Chile of at least a bronze medal.

Massu and Gonzalez are also into the last four of the men's doubles.

In women's matches, third seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia cruised into the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 11 Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Japan's eighth seed Ai Sugiyama lost 6-4, 6-4 to Alicia Molik of Australia.

The results: Men's singles (quarterfinals): Nicolas Massu (Chi) Carlos Moya (Esp) 6-2, 7-5; Fernando Gonzalez (Chi) bt Sebastien Grosjean (Fra) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; Taylor Dent (U.S.) bt Tomas Berdych (Czech) 6-4, 6-1.

Women's singles (quarterfinals): Anastasia Myskina (Rus) bt Francesca Schiavone (Ita) 6-1, 6-2; Alicia Molik (Aus) bt Ai Sugiyama (Jap) 6-3, 6-4; Amelie Mauresmo (Fra) bt Svetlana Kyznetsova (Rus) 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2; Justine Henin Hardenne (Bel) bt Mary Pierce 6-4, 6-4. — Agencies
