KSCA honours veterans

BANGALORE, AUG 20. Nostalgia reigned high on a rainy evening at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday. Lending warmth was the Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) gesture of honouring former State cricketers with a monthly pension scheme. More than 20 former State cricketers were honoured with their first monthly pension cheque of Rs.2,000 besides a Mysore peta (a shawl), a KSCA tie and a watch.

"These greats have given us great pleasure and contributed to the progress of Karnataka cricket. And they played during those days when perhaps they had to pay from their own pocket to meet the travel expenses of playing for the State. Our committee members wanted to help these former greats who are in need and our financial committee scrutinised their current status and decided that these selected players are eligible for the scheme," Brijesh Patel, KSCA secretary, said.

Former players who earned less than Rs.10,000 per month were deemed eligible for the scheme. The pension is computed as per the financial year from April 1 to March 31. The first batch of pensioners are: Messrs V. Anantha Raman, Anantharaya Shenoy, Dayanand Kamath, Ganapathi Rao, Gopal Pai, Jayaram, A.V. Jagannath, R. Krishnappa, S. Krishna, Krishna Prasad, B.K. Garudachar, Lakshminarayana, Mir Najam Hussain, K.L. Mahesh, K. Lakshman, Raja K. Gurav, Rajappa, K.R. Rajagopal, S.V. Ranga Raj, L.P. Shyam, L.T. Subbu, K.G. Suresh, K. Thimmappaiah, C.M. Varadarajan, K. Vasudeva Murthy, Vijay Kumar, K.S. Vishwanath and M.B. Vittal Rao.
