Popular Rally from today
KOCHI,
AUG. 20.
Team MRF star V.R. Naren Kumar will be looking to gain the National championship lead and set the record straight when the 21st Popular Rally begins at the Popular Automobiles Yard, Mamangalam, on Saturday morning.
Coimbatore's Naren, the National champion and the defending champion here, is just two points behind the current overall championship leader, Delhi's Philipose Mathai, as the teams line up in Kochi for the third round of the MAI National championship.
Naren and his teammates Arjun Balu, Karandip Singh and Vikram Mathais, drive new Maruti Balenos this season and compete in the 1600cc category. Since the new cars were not ready, MRF withdrew from the season-opener in Nasik early last month and Philipose jumped into the lead.
"But the winners of Nasik did not have a good run in the next event in Bangalore," said Naren, a former Asia Zone champion and India's biggest rally star. Philipose, driving an Esteem, was seventh overall and third in his class (1400cc) in the K-1000 event held in Bangalore a few days ago.
