Rangasamy leaves for Delhi

PONDICHERRY, AUG. 20. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today left here for New Delhi to participate in a meeting of the All India Congress Committee meeting tomorrow.

He told The Hindu before proceeding to Chennai enroute Delhi today that he had no plan to meet any Central Minister now, as he had planned to go to Delhi again next week to discuss development schemes with some Union Ministers.

In the meanwhile the Congress legislator, V. Vaithilingam, is understood to have left for Delhi to place before the Delimitation Commission a consolidated report containing views and suggestions of all the legislators of Pondicherry on the situation arising out of the draft proposals of the Commission to redraw the territorial limits of some of Assembly constituencies as part of delimitation.

Already a good number of legislators and leaders of different political parties including the Congress had registered protest against the proposed delimitation and also elimination of some of the important constituencies by the Commission by seeking to distribute a good number of constituent villages either with existing constituencies or new constituencies being created by the Commission.

DPI plans protest

The Pondicherry unit of the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) party's organising secretary, R. Vanangamudi, told newsmen today that volunteers of the party had planned to stage demonstrations here soon to register their protest against the proposal of delinking Abishegapakkam a predominantly Dalit village from Embalam (reserved) constituency and merging it with the new segment of Manaveli.

He said that there was a `calculated attempt` to do injustice to the downtrodden by such `anti dalit` approach.

Mr.Vanangamudi said that as the proposed delimitation would definitely be harmful to the Dalits the legislators elected from five reserved constituencies (including the one in Karaikal) should resign their MLA post and ensure that justice was procured to the underprivileged.
