ATHENS, AUG. 20. The Indian women's team of Dola Banerjee, Sumangala Sharma and Reena Kumari put up a good show before losing to the 13th placed France 227-228 in the quarterfinals of the archery competition at the Panathinaiko Stadium here on Friday. It was a heart-breaking elimination for the Indian women after they had pipped the 12th ranked Britain by almost a similar margin, 230-228 in the pre-quarterfinals. Later, South Korea beat China 241-240 to win the gold medal and Taiwan won the bronze. Dola Banerjee made up for her disappointment in the individual event in which she had been eliminated in the round of 64 itself, with rounds of 81 and 78. Reena Kumari was also able to keep pace with Dola with rounds of 78 against Britain and 77 against France to project a strong Indian challenge. However, the third Indian shooter, on the second lane, Sumangala Sharma had a below par fare, especially against France. A score of `2' in the second series, put paid to the Indian hopes, though Sumangala had two 10s with her two other arrows in that series. She had a 72 against France and a 71 against Britain. All the three shooters were consistent both in the case of Britain and France. The French had Alexandra Fouace (76), Berangere Schuh (78) and Aurore Trayan (74) shooting sharp, though they had finished 30, 31 and 60 individually during the qualifying series.
