Meares rides to a new world record

ATHENS, AUG. 20. Australia's Anna Meares became the first woman to beat the 34-second mark over 500 meters to win the time trial Olympic gold medal on Friday, edging China's Jiang Yonghua.

Natallia Tsylinskaya of Belarus got the bronze.

With power and perseverance from the start — the world champion — broke the world record with a time of 33.952, to beat the Chinese veteran, who held the 2002 record of 34.000.

Yang took silver at 34.112. Tsylinskaya set a time of 34.167. It was the second gold medal for Australia in cycling after Sara Carrigan won the road race title on Sunday. — AP
