HYDERABAD, AUG. 20. Tributes were paid to the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and his contribution to Information Technology and strengthening of local bodies recalled at a function held to mark his 60th birth anniversary here on Friday. The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, said it was Rajiv Gandhi who had not only ushered in the IT and telecom revolutions but brought about the 73rd and 74th Constitution amendments delegating more powers to Panchayat Raj and municipal bodies.
Verses from holy books
The function was organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra Commemoration Committee at Charminar, from where Mr. Gandhi had launched his Sadbhavana Yatra in 1990. The highlight was recitation of verses from the Gita, Quran and the Bible. The Minorities Welfare Minister, Mohammed Fareeduddin, said in tune with Rajiv Gandhi's vision for youth, the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, launched a Youth Empowerment Policy encompassing Rs.200 crores worth of schemes.
YSR's call for unity
The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday urged people from different sections of the society to join hands and take the nation forward as envisaged by the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Dr. Reddy garlanded the Rajiv Gandhi statue in Somajiguda where sportspersons from four parts of the twin cities converged, carrying `Sadbhavana' torches. He was followed by Rajya Sabha MP, V. Hanumantha Rao, PCC President and Minister for Rural Development, D. Srinivas, and Ministers, N. Raghuveera Reddy (Agriculture) and Mohd. Ali Shabbir, (Information). The Chief Minister gave away cheques of Rs. 1,000 each to international players Suvarna (carroms) and N. Rakesh (tennikoit) as stipend from the State Government. They participated in the `Sadbhavana' rally carrying the torches. Triple Olympian N. Mukesh also carried a torch.
