CHENNAI, AUG. 20. The Central Bureau of Investigation, handling the multicrore fake stamp cases in the State, today told a sessions court that the scam mastermind, Abdul Karim Telgi, himself told interrogators that one of his associates had paid Rs. 25 lakhs to the suspended Deputy Inspector-General, CB-CID, Mohamed Ali, for "solving cases in Tamil Nadu." Opposing bail to Mr. Ali, CBI counsel, Jacob Daniel, told the I Additional Sessions Judge that according to Mr. Telgi, the wife of another key accused, Nizamuddin, had contacted him "to arrange for money to be handed over to the DIG." Even in a telephonic conversation by Mr. Telgi, tapped in Bangalore, Mr. Ali's name figured, the prosecutor said. Yet another accused, Wahid, also confirmed that Rs. 25 lakhs was paid to the police official to "settle cases." Mr. Wahid's statement was recorded on June 4, 2004. Describing Mr. Ali as an "abettor," Mr. Daniel said he had facilitated the commission of a crime which was grave, for, it involved Rs. 30,000 crores and had profound impact on the nation's economy. The CBI denied Mr. Ali's claim that only his information helped the Karnataka police in seizing fake stamp papers with a face value of Rs. 170 crores from two godowns at Shenoy Nagar and Anna Nagar. "Who can accept this falsehood?" counsel wondered.
