Milk testing centre opened

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 20. A milk testing centre to help consumers choose quality milk brands from the market and to create awareness on the adulteration of milk, was opened by the Department of Dairy Development here on Friday. The testing centre has been set up at stall no. 10 at the Onam fair on the premises of Canara Bank at Spencer junction. The facility will function till August 26, from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Consumers who want to get milk samples tested should bring sachets unopened. In the case of liquid milk bought from vendors or other sources, at least 300 ml of the sample should be brought for testing.

Book exhibition

The British Library is organising a children's book exhibition here from August 21 to 26. The exhibition will feature books on famous personalities like Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud. A collection of 50 books by Enid Blyton is another attraction.

`Payasamela'

Hotel Chaithram is conducting a `payasamela' from August 23 to 28. Different varieties of payasams like palada, pazhapradhamam, adapradhamam and palpayasam will be served. Apart from take-home packs costing Rs. 95 per litre and Rs. 50 for half litre, payasam will also be sold at the counter at Rs. 10 per glass.

Illicit liquor

The district committee of the AIYF today alleged that smuggling and sale of illicit liquor had picked up in the district in the run up to the Onam season. In a pressnote issued here today, the AIYF district president, P.K. Raju, said that the police and Excise officials were turning a blind eye to the operations of mafia groups involved in the racket.

IRDP mela

The annual IRDP mela will be held at the SMV School grounds at Manjalikulam in Thampanoor. Goods worth Rs. 1.5 crores would be on display. The mela will feature household equipment, endemic vegetables, pickles, forest honey, readymade dresses, hill produce and toys.

Elected

R. Ravindran Nair has been elected president, S. Rajagopal, vice-president, M.R. Chandrasekharan Pillai, secretary, V.S. Parameswaran Nair, joint secretary, and G. Kumaraswamy, treasurer, of the Attukal Residents' Association.
