TIRUCHI, AUG. 20. Cadres of various left trade unions staged a demonstration here today, demanding that the Centre increase the interest rate on provident fund savings and withdraw the increase in the prices of petroleum products. The agitators, under the banner of the Confederation of All Trade Unions, also demanded that the Centre bring in legislation to protect the interests of workers of the unorganised sector and farm labourers, and allot adequate funds for implementing welfare projects. The Acts pertaining to minimum wages and social security, they said, should be strictly implemented. They urged the Government to give up its policy of increasing the cap on foreign direct investment in the three sensitive sectors. They also demanded that subsidy-linked loans be given to the small-scale industries, the entire wage and other arrears be paid to the employees of the public sector undertakings, and steps taken for reviving the sick public sector units and removing the ceiling on bonus. Balachandran led the agitation. Kasturirangan of the CITU, Balakrishnan and Suresh of the AITUC, Ponnusamy of the All India Bank Employees Association, Selvaraj of the National Federation of Telecom Employees, Mahendra of the All India Insurance Employees Association, Sirajudeen of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association, Paramasivam of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Union, and Krishnan of the BSNL Employees Union spoke.
