Dharam Singh orders suspension of two police officers after `gherao'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, AUG. 20. Following a `security breach' which allowed activists of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to `gherao' him, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Friday directed the Home Ministry to suspend two police officers serving in Bangalore. The police officers are Bette Gowda, Assistant Commissioner of Police (in-charge), Vidhana Soudha sub-division, and P. S. Gachinakatti, Inspector of the High Grounds Police Station.

Around 4.30 p.m. this evening, ABVP activists staged a demonstration over the admissions imbroglio, outside Mr. Dharam Singh's residence. The activists `gheraoed' him. Sources in the city police told The Hindu late on Friday that they were yet to receive the orders from the Ministry. Leaders of the ABVP said that though Mr. Dharam Singh had assured them that he would fix a date for meeting them, to discuss the admissions issue, they were arrested when their representatives met Mr. Dharam Singh outside his residence.

Earlier, ABVP members staged a demonstration outside the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell protesting against the suspension of the counselling process.

`CET Summit'

The ABVP will organise a "CET Summit" inviting students aspiring to join professional courses and their parents on August 25 at its office in Seshadripuram to discuss a plan intensifying its protest.
