Russia in last eight

ATHENS, AUG. 21. Russia clinched a berth in women's Olympic basketball quarterfinals on Friday, while the defending champion United States and New Zealand also posted wins.

The Russians dominated Japan inside to win 94-71, the Americans were seriously challenged for the first time but held on to beat Spain 71-58, and New Zealand needed a foul-line jumper from Megan Compain with .4 seconds left to edge China 79-77.

In later games, the Czech Republic beat South Korea 97-75, Australia won its fourth straight, 77-40 over Greece, and Brazil beat Nigeria 82-63. Elena Baranova scored 22 points and Ilona Korstin added 20 for Russia (3-1), which joined Australia in advancing from their group. Russia finished second at the 2002 World Championships.

Russia had a 57-22 advantage on the boards with centre Maria Stepanova grabbing 12 and Baranova getting 11 to outrebound Japan by themselves.— AP
