Gold for Inge de Bruijn


ATHENS, AUG. 21. Inge de Bruijn of The Netherlands won the women's 50m freestyle swimming title for the second consecutive Olympics on Saturday, while Australian Grant Hackett successfully defended his men's 1500m freestyle crown with an Olympic record time of 14 minutes, 43.40 seconds. Australia won the women's 4x100m medley relay title in a world record time of three minutes, 57.32 seconds.

Taufik Hidayat (in picture) of Indonesia won the men's badminton singles gold and Britain's Matthew Pinsent won the fourth Olympic gold of his rowing career. Germany clinched the team dressage gold in equestrian, its sixth successive Olympic title.

In what was an epic battle that ended in disappointment for India in the wee hours of Saturday, the tennis doubles pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lost to the Croatian duo of Mario Ancic and Ivan Ljubicic 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 14-16 in the play-off for bronze. On Friday night, Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele won the 10,000m gold in an Olympic record time 27:05.10.
