Ferrying of farm produce allowed in DTC buses

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 21. To soften the impact of the truckers' strike on availability and prices of farm produce in the Capital, the Delhi Transport Corporation today decided to allow ferrying of fruit, vegetables and other farm produce on its buses till the agitation by transporters ends.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the Delhi Transport Commissioner, Rajiv Talwar, who is also looking after the DTC. Since carrying of commercial goods is normally not allowed in stage carriages, the meeting decided to amend the rules for the time being and to tell the Transport Department to instruct its Enforcement Department accordingly so that those carrying farm produce in buses are not put to any harassment.

The meeting decided to allow carrying of farm produce in all the nearly 600 buses plying on the inter-state routes and to the satellite townships as also those of the 3,100 city buses which cover the rural areas of Delhi.

By paying the normal luggage charge, henceforth farmers will be allowed to carry fruit and vegetables in the buses. The DTC spokesperson said this would considerably help improve the availability of these products in the markets and would also prevent loss of precious earnings to the farmers who rely on the sale of their produce for sustenance. The scheme would remain in force till the time the truck operators would call off their strike.
