`Enable women to perform multiple roles'

COIMBATORE, AUG. 21. Society has not yet succeeded in framing norms or institutions to enable women to fulfil multiple roles they are expected to play today, the Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission, V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, said here today.

Delivering the convocation address at the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Mr. Rajasekharan Pillai observed that "we have to evolve educational institutions and systems which cater exclusively to girls, particularly in socially backward and underprivileged groups."

Gender-specific pedagogy and teaching, learning materials had to be developed in such cases. Impressive achievements and innovative approaches and efforts by both Governmental and non-governmental agencies had led to progress in education in terms of access, enrolment, retention and quality in women's education.

A challenge

However, providing access to girl children in schools in difficult circumstances posed a challenge in planning and providing quality education for all. Colleges for women would have to be a part in such focussed attempts and endeavours, he added.

Central and State Governments should implement policies on empowerment of women to effectively address gender disparities, particularly in education. Proactive initiatives had to be launched to bring about gender parity in basic education.

The managing trustee of the PSGR Trust, G. Rangasamy, the principal of the College, N. Yesodha Devi, were among those who spoke.
