Germany downs Korea

Germany 3 Korea 2

New Zealand 2 Spain 1

ATHENS, AUG. 22. Germany defeated Korea 3-2 to stay afloat in the race for a semifinal berth from group `B' in the women's section, at the hockey centre here on Sunday.

Anke Kuehn, Franziska Gude and Caroline Casaretto scored the goals for Germany that has collected six points from its four matches, to be placed second behind the Netherlands.

Korea, that ended up with four points, found the target through Mihyun Park and Seong Eun Kim, but was never in the race to beat the Germans, having conceded a 2-0 lead.

In the other match in the morning, between the lowly placed teams in group `A', New Zealand recorded a 2-1 triumph over Spain, to earn three points, its first points from the tournament. Jaimee Provan and Niniwa Roberts-Lang scored for the Kiwis. Erdoitza Goikoetxea equalised immediately after New Zealand's first goal, but the team was unable to answer the second strike by the Kiwis. Spain ended its campaign without winning a point. — Our Special Correspondent
