PATNA, AUG. 22. The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, today said the country will be free from polio by 2005. Launching the pulse polio campaign here along with Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi, Mr Ramadoss said only 34 cases of polio had been reported in the country during the year. He lauded Mrs Rabri Devi for the work she initiated to eradicate polio from the state. The minister reiterated that his government would provide all possible assistance to Bihar not only for polio eradication but also for treating Kalazar (black fever), leprosy and AIDS. Dr Ramadoss who was on a day's visit to Bihar also flagged off six trucks of relief materials donated by the Bihar unit of the Indian Red Cross Society to the flood-affected districts of the State. He inaugurated the distribution of mobile telephone booth on tricycle for the disabled people, a unique concept incorporated by the IRCS for providing self-employment to the disabled. Mrs Rabri reasserted that the state government was committed to eradicating polio. She said it was a collective responsibility of all concerned to discharge their duty by making a concerted effort. Rail Minister and RJD Chief Lalu Prasad also said, ``We have pledged to eradicate it. We have been working very hard to root out polio, and we will do it.'' He said even in the remote areas campaigns were being carried out to make people aware of the benefits of the programme. Earlier on his arrival at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain International Airport here, Dr Ramadoss was welcomed by Bihar Health Minister Shakuni Choudhary, Director General of Central Government Health Scheme S P Aggarwal, honorary director of IRCS, Patna S P Singh among others.
