Clouds likely

NEW DELHI AUG. 22. The weatherman today forecast a generally cloudy sky with few spells of rain or thundershower for the Capital on Monday. The maximum and minimum temperature recorded at Safdarjung on Sunday was 32.6 and 24.6 degree Celsius, while Palam recorded a maximum of 31.7 and a minimum of 25.2 degree Celsius. Safdarjung received a rainfall of 10.7 mm and Palam of 20.1 mm.

The maximum and minimum humidity recorded at Safdarjung was 95 per cent and 75 per cent respectively, while at Palam it was 95 per cent and 73 per cent respectively.

Sex rackets busted

NEW DELHI AUG. 22. Four alleged pimps, including the 72-year-old owner of a guesthouse, and nine call girls have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police in two separate raids.

The Special Team of the Crime Branch had sent a decoy to strike a deal at Lal Guest House in Saket, South Delhi, on Saturday. He booked a room in the hotel and around 10 p.m., the owner, Chiranji Lal, along with Chander Chaudhary and one Madhu, approached the decoy and offered six girls at a rate of Rs. 2,000 each for the night. The waiting police team then rounded up all the girls, aged between 19 and 22, and the pimps. The girls came from various parts of the Capital. Chiranji had been running the guesthouse for the past two years.

In another raid, the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Crime Branch arrested a pimp and three girls from near Mc Donald's restaurant in main market Punjabi Bagh, West Delhi, on Saturday around 6-30 p.m. The pimp, Nishchal Kumar, a resident of kothi No. 62, West Punjabi Bagh, had also demanded Rs. 2,000 for each girl from the decoy.

Satta racket busted

NEW DELHI AUG. 22. Three persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly running a betting racket. According to the police, a raid was carried out at C-5/179-180, Sector- 6, Rohini, in North-West Delhi on Saturday when the one-day cricket match between India and Pakistan was underway in Holland. Those arrested have been identified as Ashok Kumar (45), Chander Parkash (52) and Sunil Kumar (42). The police recovered the accessories used in running the racket from the spot. The accused had placed bets worth over Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

Bird seller arrested

NEW DELHI AUG. 22. One person has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly selling birds of endangered species. According to the police, Mohammad Ilias, a resident of G.B. Road, was arrested when he was found selling seven parrots and 15 "muniyas", both endangered species, near Jama Masjid on Saturday. Ilias told the police that he had been selling pigeons for the past 30 years and also used to sell the birds of endangered species under the garb of this business. Further investigations in the case are on.

Criminal nabbed

NEW DELHI AUG. 22. An alleged criminal carrying a reward on his head and wanted in a murder case has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. According to the police, Janesh Bhadana, wanted in the murder of Naresh Bhati, a leader in neighbouring Ghaziabad, earlier this year was arrested outside Tis Hazari courts where he had come to meet his sister on Saturday. The police are trying to trace his other contacts. Further investigations in the case are on.
