VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 22. The Minister for Finance, K. Rosaiah, on Sunday lauded the contribution of Rotary International for the campaign to eradicate polio by 2005. Inaugurating a pulse polio programme conducted by the Rotary Club Hill View and the Rotary Couples Club at the Rural Health Centre in Simhachalam, he exuded confidence that polio would be eradicated completely by next year. Along with Mr. Rosaiah, the Minister for Commercial Taxes, Konathala Ramakrishna, the MLAs, Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy, S. Ranga Raju and Karri Sitaram, took part. Polio drops were administrated to 200 children at the Rural Health Centre during the day. Among others, the District Immunisation Officer, J. Sarojini, the deputy civil surgeon, K.V.S. Gowreswar Rao, the Rotary Club Hill View president, M.V. Somasekhar, the secretary, Bharati Sikand, the Rotary Couples Club president, P. Krishna Prasad and the secretary, M. Sudhir, were present.
Adopted
Later, Mr. Somasekhar told reporters that the Rural Health Centre covering 80,000 people from 56 villages had been adopted by their club. He said they would grant funds for giving a facelift to the centre, which was set up in 1957. The hospital, which has four medical officers and a dentist, is spread over an area of three acres. On an average 150 patients visit the hospital daily. Dr. Sarojini said that they had covered over 4 lakh children in the age group of 0-5 in the district.
