Minister lauds Shobha's effort

NEW DELHI, AUG. 23. Heptathlete J. J. Shobha has earned compliments from the Union Sports Minister, Sunil Dutt, for her gallant show in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

In a letter sent to Shobha, Mr. Dutt wrote: "The determination, dedication and courage with which you participated despite all odds will go a long way in setting the example for sportspersons all over, specially, the present and future aspirants of our country.

"I pray for your early recovery and look forward to felicitate you on your return to India."

Even as the giant scoreboard at the Athletics complex flashed the DNS sign, Shobha stunned all present by lining up for the 800m, the final of the heptathlon event against the doctor's advice, after having torn ligaments in her knee during javelin throw. The Indian finished third and ended up 11th with a total of 6172 points. — Our Sports Reporter
