Bahrain hit by power cut

MANAMA, AUG. 23. Electricity failed across Bahrain on Monday because of a technical fault, slowing business, hitting U.S. Navy operations and leaving people without air conditioning in the heat and humidity of the Gulf.

Bahrain, home to some 600,000 persons, often runs out of power in the summer, but an outage as widespread and long lasting as Monday's was rare.

A spokeswoman for the Electricity Department blamed a "technical fault" in a distribution control facility located just outside Manama. She said technicians were working to gradually restore power over several hours.
